FAQ

  • How does what3words handle buildings of more than one floor, such as apartment blocks?

Most addressing systems only work in two dimensions (longitude and latitude) and need additional information to specify height: Flat 6, 5th floor, 12 Lonsdale Road. A similar approach can be used with 3 word addresses: Flat 6, 5th floor, index.home.raft.

There is a 3 word address for all locations, but the supporting technology for indoor positioning, mapping, and navigation is not yet developed enough for there to be a benefit in specifying an address beyond the front door.

  • Can I buy my own words or change some of the words?

what3words is a universal addressing system that never changes. All 3 word addresses are randomly allocated and completely fixed so they can be used both online and offline. Offline maps would quickly become irrelevant if people were making changes all the time, so addresses cannot be bought or changed.

  • Why are the words randomly assigned? Wouldn't it be better if there was some logic / hierarchy / structure to the naming structure?

what3words assigns the words randomly to make troubleshooting easier. If similar 3 word combinations were placed near each other, noticing a mistake would be difficult. The system has been designed so that similar 3 word addresses are a long way away from each other, so it is immediately obvious if a mistake has been made.
