FAQ

  • Why 3m x 3m?

what3words uses 3 metre x 3 metre squares because they are small enough to be useful for labelling specific areas such as water points or a front gate, but not so small that they run out of words to label all the squares, or become too specific to indicate places such as houses.

  • What if I spell or say a word incorrectly or get the words in the wrong order?

People make errors – lots of errors – and what3words is optimised to recognise and correct mistakes by both the sender and receiver of a 3 word address. The what3words AutoSuggest system picks up errors in spelling, typing and speaking 3 word addresses.

Similar-sounding addresses are as far away from each other as possible, so they can use your location to intelligently guess where you meant.

You can see the AutoSuggest feature in action on https://map.what3words.com/, in the app, and in some of what3words’ partners' apps: when you type in a 3 word address, the AutoSuggest system will prompt you with clever suggestions to help you get it right every time.

  • Who uses it?

Have a look at the Products and Industries sections on what3words’ website for up-to-date information on the companies and apps that are using 3 word addresses. Individuals also use what3words to make their everyday life easier.
